HOLZMINDEN (10.02.08 – 17.02.08)
1. Downtown Holzminden 2. Eating ice cream in the cold 3. In lena's apartment 4. Lunch in the canteen (fish)

The weather in holzminden is really erratic. It can vary from -2°C to 10°C. It is a really small town and there are like only 5 to 6 restaurants in the town excluding those in the hotels. The hotel I am staying in (Schleif Muhle) is about 10 min walk to the company but it’s like 30 min walk to the restaurant which is in their so called town.

The town is very small. Maybe like the size of Clementi central. The shopping centre aren’t great and everything is very expensive. The food in the restaurant is salty.

All the shops including supermarkets are not allowed to open on Sunday thus the town is like a dead town and there is simply nothing to do on Sunday. Only restaurants and bakeries are allowed to open. On the first Sunday, we went to the town to have lunch with leng leng and soo lan (trainee flavorist from Singapore). Since they have been in holzminden since last October, they pretty much know where to bring us to. I saw from the menu, handmade sausages and decided to order. When it came, it was all ham!!! Different kinds of ham!! It looks like my breakfast. And breakfast is the same every morning. Then we went to the famous weser river and walked thru the park and back to their apartment. In the evening, Edmund and myself went to lena’s (perfumer trainee from Singapore) apartment to have dinner. She cooked curry chicken with rice.

Monday: Went to Symrise. Had lunch in the canteen for 5.50 € for a steak and a drink. It’s really expensive cos in Symrise Singapore, we have free lunch. Had dinner at leng leng’s and soo lan’s apartment. They cooked rice with some vege and soup.

Tuesday: Had dinner at a Turkish restaurant. Ordered pizza and shared it with lena. The portion here is super huge and definitely not able to finish.

Wednesday: We met up with all the Singapore trainee flavorist, 5 of them in all and went to Hellers Krug for dinner. It’s really cool, having Singaporeans around… it’s juz like a mini Singapore. The dinner costs us abt 170€ which is charged to the company. Heee.. had a great time.

Thursday: The trainers from Flavor Engineering and Technology department, Eric Grube and Jessica Hellborn invited Edmund and myself to dinner at a Italian restaurant. Had pasta… oooo… it was salty too.

Friday: We managed to borrow bicycles from Eric Grube and we cycled to town to shop. First time I perspired in winter at -2°C because got to cycle upslope. Finally managed to catch a glimpse of the town when it’s open for half an hour. There’s this shop that sells pretty cheap stuff. But when we went they were starting to pack up. Got a cardigan for my niece, keira for 4.99€. Pretty cheap, I would say for a knitted with embroidery cardigan. This is the first thing I bought in Germany. There is really nothing to buy.

I guess Germany or Europe is just a place for sightseeing bcos everything is so expensive. The buildings are nice. Went to Hanover on Saturday. To be continued …
